Job Title: Legal Case Coordinator

Location: Honolulu, HI 96817

Employment Type: Full-time, starting at $61,000 – $85,000 per year

Salary commensurate with experience

Position Overview

This role requires excellent written, analytical, and oral advocacy skills, with responsibilities including preparing legal document, and managing a caseload with the staff attorneys and workers’ compensation specialist.

  • Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner
  • Demonstrates commitment to the needs of United Public Workers (UPW) and its members
  • Analytical and detail oriented, capable of multitasking
  • Provide legal assistance to legal department

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assists with case management of the Workers’ Compensation (WC) Program
  • Serves as a resource to members that participate in the UPW WC Program
  • Manage workers compensation services and labor arbitration cases
  • Attend mediations, conferences, and hearings, both telephonic and in-person
  • Oversee an assigned caseload with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple cases and projects
  • Research, analyze, and present information clearly, concisely, orally, and in writing
  • Responds appropriately to member inquiries that are participating in the UPW WC program and grievances
  • Effectively communicates with members and staff
  • Interpret laws, rules, and regulations related to labor and employment.   
  • Attends staff meetings, participate in discussions, and contributes meaningful input
  • Follow oral and written instructions. 
  • Handle escalated and time-sensitive matters as needed
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university. Work experience may be substituted for a bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis. Such experience must have provided the knowledge, skills, and analytical ability normally gained from the attainment of a bachelor’s degree. 
  • At least one (1) year of experience resolving complex issues, legal matters, and/or servicing Hawai’i government employees. 
  • Knowledge of State laws regarding Workers’ Compensation. 
  • Ability to interact effectively with members, employer representatives, and staff, either via direct contact or telephone; speak before a hearings officer; produce written reports and recommendations on behalf of members; analyze and follow-up on members concerns related to WC; participate in all UPW/AFSCME activities including after-hours events; travel off-island as required for union business; compose letters, memos, reports, and briefings; and operate computers to generate documents. 
  • Ability to write clearly, comprehensive reports and other documents. Read and interpret complex written material. Solve complex problems logically and systematically. 
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs required. 
  • Valid Hawaii Drivers’ License and personal vehicle required.

The Union Representative supports the United Public Workers (UPW) in protecting and advancing the rights of its members through training, investigations, member services, grievance handling, and outreach. Under general supervision, the Union Representative assists higher-level staff with representation, education, and organizing activities while gradually developing the knowledge and skills necessary to independently advocate for members.
