This program offers non-traditional adult learners and union officers the opportunity to obtain a certificate in Labor Studies and equip themselves with the skills necessary for careers as labor resource specialists.

The Center for Labor Education & Research (CLEAR) has announced the deadline for scholarships for the Labor Studies Certificate Program at the University of Hawai’i–West O’ahu. The application period is open until December 15, 2023, and the online classes will begin on January 8, 2024. This program offers non-traditional adult learners and union officers the opportunity to obtain a certificate in Labor Studies and equip themselves with the skills necessary for careers as labor resource specialists.

The Hawaii AFL-CIO Scholarship provides up to $5000 in funds for affiliate staff and affiliate members to obtain a certificate in Labor Studies from the University of Hawai’i – West O’ahu. The Hawaii State AFL-CIO’s Labor Community Services Program Scholarship also provides up to $5,000 in funds and supports students and those interested in labor education and the labor community. Additionally, UNITE HERE, Local 5 Labor Studies Scholarship supports its members and their families as well as students with an interest in improving the lives of working people.

The 15-credit Labor Studies certificate program is offered online and covers topics such as union structures and politics, workers’ rights, labor laws, collective bargaining, and labor theory. Non-traditional adult learners and union officers may have their high school GPA and course requirements met with documentation of experience. Unionists and traditional students engage in the content concurrently and submit written and podcast responses. All courses meet the university criteria for oral/speech communication development.

Students who have enrolled in the program have given positive feedback on the course content and its relevance: “I have learned so much new information about how society has been functioning around me my entire lifetime,” said one UHWO student. Another student who enrolled in the labor leadership course said, “As an elected officer of my union, this course brought vital insights into not only the history of labor in the US and in the world, but also to the ethical standards with which we should operate.”
