Message from State Director Dayton M. Nakanelua
Our Union Our Family, Health and Wellness 1st
Health concerns raised by the Coronavirus pandemic has prompted me to take prudent and precautionary measures on behalf of our UPW membership. Therefore, until further notice, all Section 8 meetings, Division Board meetings, and any other group membership gatherings shall be suspended. This action is based on recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control, the World Health Organization, and the Governor’s Office, who all identify maintaining social distancing as one way to minimize the spread of the virus.
While this action may appear extreme, the seriousness of the risk to our members and their families require immediate and decisive action. My staff and I will continue to monitor the federal and state reports and updates in order to determine appropriate course of action. I recognize that the fluidity of this novel situation will require flexibility from all of us as new information develops on a daily basis.
I encourage our members to be proactive in seeking information in order to gain information on the prevention, the symptoms, and the recommendations from the various federal and state health organizations. In addition, if you have any questions in the workplace, you should contact your departmental human resources office.
Members can continue to seek assistance from the business agents, membership services representative and the business office. We will also be posting information on the UPW website (upwhawaii.org).
I cannot emphasize enough how fluid the nature of this situation is, therefore, I ask the understanding and patience of the membership as we attempt to take prompt and appropriate actions based on the most current information that we receive.
