Section 8 Meetings: Our Right, Our Kuleana

A Union is founded upon the idea of fairness in the workplace. Its strength is built one member at a time. Standing in solidarity, the power of those members creates a contract, one clause at a time.

Our contract was forged by generations of UPW members. Early members volunteered personal time on the weekends, after work, and on strike lines. Their efforts forged a contract providing fair benefits for future generations. Today, we continue their legacy of courage and tenacity through Section 8 Educational and Informational meetings – organized around and discussing critical issues.

The time we spend together in Section 8 meetings is a blessing born on the backs of generations of UPW members. Historically, Section 8 meetings have been a safe place for members to discuss and organize around issues that are important to us.

Our Union was established in 1944 during a time when being ill and not showing up for work could mean getting fired. Today, because of our resilience and proud history of action, sick leave is guaranteed in our public sector contracts.

Please see the listings by division below for meeting dates and times, with Oahu to be announced shortly. Check back here for the most up-to-date information on Section 8 meetings in your area.

Members received an update on Temporary Hazard Pay, had an opportunity to speak with UPW-endorsed candidates in our top races, learned about the UPW endorsement process, and got information on registering to vote, voting, and what to do if you haven’t received your ballot yet in the mail. UPW Gubernatorial pick Kai Kahele explained his plans for his administration and what he will do for members if he is elected. Members also had a chance to ask questions before we moved on from Kai’s address to the membership.

If you missed Section 8 meetings in your area, below is a short clip from Kai Kahele, our endorsed candidate in the gubernatorial race.
