Workers’ union sues to halt privatization of Maui hospitals

WAILUKU, Hawaii (AP) - A union representing workers at Maui Memorial Medical Center has filed a lawsuit to stop the state from privatizing hospitals in Maui County.

Gov. David Ige signed a bill into law in June that clears the way for a possible takeover of Maui Memorial Medical Center by the nonprofit Hawaii Pacific Health or another operator. The bill tasks Ige with leading negotiations for the transition. The measure would cover Maui Memorial, Kula Hospital & Clinic and Lanai Community Hospital.

In the lawsuit filed by United Public Workers against Ige Friday, the union says House Bill 1075 violates the contract clause of the Constitution as well as previously negotiated collective bargaining agreements.

The Maui hospitals are in the due diligence process with both Hawaii Pacific Health and Kaiser Foundation Hospitals.
